REZŪM & BPH TREATMENT IN SEOUL

If you are taking medication for an enlarged prostate but still have a weak urine stream, difficulty starting urination, frequent urination, or a feeling that your bladder does not empty completely, you may be wondering what comes next.

Rezūm is one minimally invasive treatment option for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). But the first question is not simply whether Rezūm is available. It is whether this treatment is appropriate for your prostate anatomy, urinary function, and symptoms.

This is why an evaluation by a urology specialist is important before deciding on a BPH procedure.

01 · UNDERSTANDING REZŪM

What Is Rezūm Treatment for BPH?

Doctor and staff attending to a patient in a treatment room

Rezūm is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat urinary symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly known as an enlarged prostate.

The procedure delivers controlled water vapor into selected areas of enlarged prostate tissue. The thermal energy carried by the vapor affects the targeted tissue, which is gradually reduced through the body's natural healing response.

As the treated tissue decreases over time, pressure around the urethra may be reduced and urinary symptoms may improve.

Rezūm does not remove a large amount of prostate tissue immediately. The effect develops gradually as the treated tissue changes over the following weeks and months.

This is one reason patients may not notice a major difference immediately after the procedure. The timing and degree of improvement can vary from person to person.

02 · BEFORE REZŪM

Why Is an Evaluation Needed Before Rezūm Treatment?

Two men can have similar urinary symptoms but need different treatment. Prostate size and anatomy, urinary flow, the amount of urine remaining in the bladder after urination, previous treatment, and bladder function can all influence which BPH treatment may be appropriate.

This is why choosing Rezūm should begin with an evaluation rather than with the procedure itself.

Evaluation What It Checks Why It Matters
Prostate ultrasound Prostate size and anatomy Helps assess treatment suitability
Uroflowmetry Urinary flow and speed Helps assess voiding function
Post-void residual Urine left after urination Shows how well the bladder empties
Medication review Current and previous BPH medication Helps guide the next treatment step

PSA blood testing may also be considered when clinically appropriate. Your medical history, previous urinary infections or inflammation, current medications, and usual voiding pattern can also provide useful information.

Prostate size alone does not determine the treatment. The overall decision may also depend on prostate anatomy, urinary flow, residual urine, bladder function, symptom severity, medical history, and previous treatment.

03 · WHEN TO CONSIDER REZŪM

What If BPH Medication Is Not Working Well Enough?

Medication is commonly used to manage urinary symptoms related to BPH. For some men, however, bothersome symptoms continue despite treatment, or medication may not be well tolerated.

If you are still experiencing urinary problems, the next step does not automatically have to be Rezūm or surgery. It may be useful to reassess why the symptoms are continuing.

Further evaluation may be considered if you continue to notice:

These symptoms can occur with BPH, but they are not specific to an enlarged prostate. A specialist evaluation can help determine whether prostate obstruction or another urinary condition may be contributing to the problem.

04 · HOW IT WORKS

How Does Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy Work?

Rezūm uses controlled water vapor energy to treat selected areas of enlarged prostate tissue that are contributing to urinary obstruction. The thermal energy carried by the vapor is transferred to the targeted tissue. The body then gradually reabsorbs the treated tissue as part of its natural healing response.

As this process occurs, obstruction around the urethra may decrease and urinary symptoms may improve. Because this process takes time, Rezūm is different from procedures that immediately remove a larger amount of prostate tissue. Symptom improvement is generally gradual rather than immediate.

Rezūm is a minimally invasive procedure, but it is still a medical procedure. It has a recovery period and potential side effects, and the response to treatment can vary between patients.

05 · RECOVERY

What Can You Expect After Rezūm Treatment?

Recovery is not exactly the same for every patient. Temporary urinary irritation can occur after Rezūm. Some patients may experience burning or discomfort during urination, increased urinary frequency or urgency, blood in the urine, or temporary difficulty urinating.

Temporary catheterization may be needed in some cases depending on swelling, prostate anatomy, urinary function, and the individual clinical situation.

Symptom improvement is also usually gradual rather than immediate. Your urologist can provide activity, hydration, medication, and follow-up instructions based on your condition and recovery after the procedure.

During recovery, contact your healthcare provider if your urinary symptoms become concerning or differ from the recovery course you were advised to expect.

06 · TREATMENT SELECTION

Is Rezūm the Right BPH Treatment for Everyone?

No single BPH treatment is appropriate for every patient. Rezūm may be considered for selected patients with bothersome urinary symptoms related to an enlarged prostate. However, the decision should be based on more than the symptoms alone.

Prostate anatomy, urinary flow, residual urine, bladder function, medical history, previous treatment, and individual treatment goals may all affect the choice.

In some cases, continuing or adjusting medication may be appropriate. In others, another minimally invasive procedure or surgical treatment may be discussed.

The important question is not simply, “Is Rezūm better?” It is, “Which treatment option is appropriate for my urinary symptoms, prostate anatomy, and overall condition?”

07 · DIRECT SPECIALIST CARE IN SEOUL

Can You Consult a Urology Specialist Directly for BPH in Seoul?

In many healthcare systems, urinary symptoms are first evaluated by a general practitioner (GP), with a referral to a urology specialist when further evaluation is needed.

In Seoul, patients may be able to consult a urology specialist directly for urinary and prostate concerns without first going through a GP.

At Gangnam St. Mary’s Urology Clinic, patients with prostate and BPH-related urinary concerns can consult directly with a urologist. This allows the consultation to focus specifically on the urinary tract and prostate from the beginning.

A prostate and BPH specialist evaluation may include a review of your urinary symptoms, previous medication, urinary flow, residual urine, and prostate size and anatomy. The findings can then be used to discuss whether continued medication, Rezūm, another minimally invasive procedure, or a different treatment approach may be considered.

Direct specialist consultation can also be useful if you have already been evaluated or treated elsewhere but continue to experience urinary symptoms. Persistent symptoms can be reassessed rather than assuming that they are caused by an enlarged prostate alone.

08 · FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Rezūm Treatment in Seoul

Is Rezūm a surgery?

Rezūm is generally described as a minimally invasive procedure for BPH. It uses controlled water vapor energy to treat selected prostate tissue. Although it is less invasive than some surgical approaches, it is still a medical procedure with potential side effects and a recovery period.

Can Rezūm be considered if BPH medication is not working?

It may be one option to discuss if urinary symptoms remain bothersome despite medication or if medication is not well tolerated. Before choosing a procedure, the cause of the persistent symptoms and the condition of the prostate and bladder should be evaluated.

What tests may be performed before Rezūm?

The evaluation may include a review of urinary symptoms and medication history, uroflowmetry, prostate ultrasound, measurement of post-void residual urine, and PSA testing when clinically appropriate. The exact evaluation depends on the individual patient.

Does Rezūm work immediately?

Not usually. The treated prostate tissue changes gradually, so improvement in urinary symptoms may develop over time rather than immediately after the procedure.

Will I need a catheter after Rezūm?

Some patients may require temporary catheterization after treatment. Whether a catheter is needed and how long it remains in place can vary depending on urinary function, prostate anatomy, swelling, and other clinical factors.

Can I see a urology specialist directly in Seoul?

Yes. Patients can consult directly with a urologist at Gangnam St. Mary’s Urology Clinic for urinary, prostate, and BPH-related concerns. A GP referral is not required for the initial consultation at the clinic. Consultations are available in English.
